"Still a long way to go": Corona epidemic is not over, said WHO Chief

Tedros said that two-thirds of the world’s population has been vaccinated.

Geneva:

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday rejected his claim that the end of the Kovid-19 epidemic is near. In saying this, he warned that “there is still a long way to go” to declare the end of the crisis. Last week, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters that the world was “never in a better position to end the pandemic. The end is near.”

However, US President Joe Biden appeared to say in an interview broadcast on Sunday that the pandemic is “over” in the United States. Here, speaking to the media again on Thursday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Tedros was less enthusiastic, saying that “seeing the end does not mean we are at the end.”

He reiterated that the world is in the best position ever to end the pandemic. This is because at present the number of weekly deaths continues to decline. Only 10 percent of the numbers which were at the peak in January 2021 are now left.

Tedros said that two-thirds of the world’s population has been vaccinated, including three-quarters of health workers and older people. “We’ve spent two and a half years in a long, dark tunnel, and now we’re starting to see the light at the end of that tunnel,” he said. However, he insisted, “There is still a long way to go. The tunnel is still dark, there are many obstacles that can haunt us, if we do not pay attention.”
