Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), has come out with a big statement regarding the end of the corona virus epidemic. The WHO chief told the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Thursday that the pandemic is not over, but its end is visible. There has been a big decline in the cases of corona virus and deaths due to it around the world. Since then the discussion has started whether the epidemic is now in its last phase.
The WHO chief said that the end of the epidemic does not mean that we are in its last phase. Yes, we are in a better position than ever before. There has been a decline in the number of weekly deaths worldwide. We are currently at 10 per cent as compared to January 2021. Two-thirds of the world’s population has been vaccinated. In which three quarters include health workers and elderly people.
10 thousand deaths in a week is a very high figure
The WHO chief said, the corona restrictions implemented in most countries of the world have been abolished and life is again starting to look like before the pandemic. Referring to the old death, he said that 10 thousand deaths in a week is too much, most of these deaths could have been prevented. He said that there is still a long gap in vaccination in some countries, especially in low and middle income countries.
There is a glimpse of light in the dark tunnel
He further said, we have spent a long time of two and a half years in a dark tunnel and now we have started seeing a glimpse of light in that tunnel. But we still have a long way to go and the tunnel is still dark. There are many obstacles which if we do not pay attention, they can trouble us. We all hope that we can and will do this. Reaching the end of the tunnel will leave the epidemic behind. We have to reach the end of the pandemic by focusing on the way ahead and with purpose and care.
no one is safe until everyone is safe
He said that the situation of the pandemic has been that no one is safe until everyone is safe. This means that everyone needs to use distance, masks and ventilation to stay safe when needed. This means that everyone needs access to safety equipment. He said that still in low-income countries, only 19 percent of the population has been vaccinated.
