The Uttar Pradesh government is continuously increasing the distribution of seeds, but the production of food grains is falling short of the target. The important reason for this sequence going on for the last several years is believed to be adverse weather patterns. This time again due to premature onset of summer, the wheat crop is under threat. Agricultural scientists say that the day is getting hot, which is not right for all crops and especially wheat.

The government is making all efforts regarding the production of crops. Seeds are being distributed continuously. In the beginning of this session, when the weather deteriorated, the seeds of pulses and oilseeds were distributed free of cost. Apart from this, there is maximum emphasis on increasing the production of staple food grains like wheat and rice. Even after all these exercises, the production is falling due to the changing weather conditions, despite distribution of more seeds than the target. Looking at the distribution of seeds for the entire Kharif season of the year 2020-2021, a target was set to distribute 8.20 lakh quintals of seeds. Against this, 8.36 lakh metric tonnes of seeds were distributed.

As against 8.39 lakh metric tonnes in the year 2021-22, 8.41 lakh metric tonnes, whereas in the year 2022-2023, 8.63 lakh metric tonnes of seeds were distributed as against 8.86. In spite of this, the production of Kharif crops in these years was only 214 lakh MT against 222 lakh MT, 199 against 221 and only 192 lakh MT against 236, respectively. Seed distribution increased in the rabi season as well, but the production in the year 2021-22 was 401 lakh metric tonnes as compared to 471 lakh metric tonnes, whereas in the year 2022-2023, 392 lakh metric tonnes was produced as against 418. At present, this year’s target has been kept at 421 lakh metric tonnes.

Still hope: Agricultural scientist Dr. Sandeep Chaudhary told that the weather is continuously affecting the farmers. This is happening since last many years. When the crop comes to ripen, the weather is bad. Sometimes it rains and sometimes it is dry. This time summer started before time. Which can affect the production of wheat. There is every possibility of wheat becoming weak. Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi says that there is a complete effort to increase production. Whenever there was loss to the farmer, the government compensated. The weather has been bad but hopefully a good production.
