UNGA Address: In the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the addresses of various heads of state are going on. On the same platform, while French President Emmanuel Macron praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Turkish President Rajab Tayyip Erdogan raised the Kashmir issue. “Even after 75 years of independence, peace and unity between India and Pakistan has not been established. This is very unfortunate. We hope and pray that a fair and lasting peace and prosperity prevail in Kashmir. This is not the first time that Turkish President Rajab Tayyip Erdogan has raised the Kashmir issue.
Erdogan’s stand on Kashmir
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s statement on Kashmir comes after he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the SCO summit last month. Even before this, when Turkey raised the Kashmir issue at various international forums, India protested and called it an issue between two countries. Due to this stand of Turkey, its relations with India have been affected. India feels that by doing this Turkey is helping Pakistan in a way.
Erdogan said this in the Parliament of Pakistan in 2020
Earlier in 2020, Erdogan made a controversial statement on Kashmir in the Parliament of Pakistan. He compared the struggle of the Kashmiri people to the fight of the Turkish people against foreign forces during the First World War. Subsequently, India criticized his remarks and asked him not to interfere in India’s internal affairs. External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar had said that India rejects all references made by the Turkish President on Jammu and Kashmir.
