Mumbai: It has been decided to increase the number of nominated members in the metropolitan municipalities of the state including Mumbai, Nagpur, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Thane. Now 10 members will be nominated in big metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune. This decision was taken in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday.
It is notable that till now the number of nominated members in all the municipal corporations of the state including Mumbai was fixed at five. According to the new decision, 10 percent of the total seats in the Municipal Corporations or a maximum of 10 members can be nominated. For this, it was decided to amend Section 5(1)(b) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act.

With this, the number of nominated members in the 227-member Mumbai Municipal Corporation will increase from five to 10. Apart from this Thane, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation where the number of corporators is above 100. There will also be 10 nominated members. In Municipal Corporations where the number of members is less than 100, the rule of 10 percent nominated members will be applicable. It was decided to seek the opinion of the Advocate General of the State of Maharashtra in this regard.

Section 5(1)(b) of the Bombay Municipal Corporation Act, 1888 and Section 5(2)(b) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, 1949 determine the number of municipal members to be nominated. As per rules, persons from different fields having experience, efficiency and knowledge of civil administration are selected as nominated members. However, these rules are rarely being followed.
