Mathura: Rape victim gets justice after 28 years, two convicts sentenced to seven years imprisonment

A rape victim in Mathura got justice after 28 years. The court has sentenced both the accused to seven years imprisonment for the incident that took place in a village in Govardhan. Both had gang-raped the woman at gunpoint. Following the court’s decision, both the accused have been sent to jail.

The incident is of 9 May 1994. Hari and Prem, a resident of a village in Govardhan area, had called the victim woman and her husband to take straw from the field. The woman’s husband had come home with straw. But his wife was caught midway by both the accused. The accused raped her at gunpoint.

The children of the woman were also present at the time of the incident. The children informed this to the father. When he wanted to file a report from the police station, the police did not listen. Later, the report was registered on the orders of the court. After a long judicial battle, the woman got justice on Wednesday after 28 years.

While hearing the case, Special Judge SCST Act Manoj Kumar Mishra convicted the accused Hari and Prem for rape and sentenced them to imprisonment for seven years each. Special Public Prosecutor Suresh Prasad Sharma said that along with the punishment, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 7,000 each on both of them.

The judicial process went on for so long that the accused, who were young, became old by the time the court’s decision came. He was a youth when the incident was alleged against him. The Special Public Prosecutor told that earlier there was a problem in getting the FIR itself. Later, when the report was filed on the orders of the court, the accused had obtained a stay from the High Court. Presently both the accused are about 65-65 years old.
