Mumbai: It has been planned to complete the journey from Mumbai’s western suburb Borivali to Thane in 15 to 20 minutes instead of one and a half hours. The Shinde-Fadnavis government is promoting various infra projects to solve the problem of heavy traffic jams in MMR. Under this, MMRDA has issued a tender for the construction of underground tunnel road in Sanjay Gandhi National Park. It was told that the work on the project would start in the monsoon. It is notable that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde himself has already been vocal about the underground road from Thane to Borivali. Earlier this work was to be done through MSRDC, but Chief Minister Eknath Shinde himself handed it over to MMRDA.
11.8 km subway
The route will be 11.8 km long from inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Out of this, about 10.8 km long twin tunnel will be constructed. Which will be the longest tunnel, which will be 23 meters below the ground. MMRDA has got clearance from the National Board for Wildlife. According to a senior MMRDA official, a deadline of four years has been fixed to complete the project.

The distance from Thane to Borivali is approximately 24 km. It takes 1 to 1.5 hours to travel from Borivali to Thane due to heavy traffic on the Ghodbunder Road route to Borivali. This distance will be halved once the tunnel road is built. Fuel will be saved over time in travel.

It was told that an estimated Rs 13,200 crore would be spent on this project. According to MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner SVR Srinivas, the tunnel road will have state-of-the-art facilities like security cameras, speed cameras, smoke detectors, ventilation equipment, fire extinguishers, a lay-bay area etc. Both the tunnels will have a three-lane road.
