Former Chairman of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs Najeeb Shah, who attended MASCRADE 2022 organized by FICCI Cascade, told how smuggling happens in India. He said that India’s border area is very long, due to which smuggling can happen from Pakistan and other countries. Smuggling is happening in India from the sea border through containers, air cargo, passengers. This problem is very serious and it is necessary to control it.
Drug trade is huge
Regarding the smuggling of narcotics, he said that the drug business is becoming very big as the profit is very high in it. If a kilo of cocaine reaches India through smuggling and is sold, then there is a manifold profit in it. There is a lot of demand for the drug business in smuggling and counterfeiting, those who buy it pay a hefty amount.
Don’t fall into the trap of buying cheap stuff
He said that the demand for smuggling and counterfeiting goods is very high, because these goods are available cheaply. Buyers understand that what they are buying is cheap and right. Although it may be fake and you cannot complain about it anywhere. In such a situation, the consumer must take the bill of that item while buying any thing, you must have proof of buying the item.
In response to the question of how common citizens should avoid cheap goods and smuggling goods, he said that if I am paying a bill for any goods, then I am paying tax and if there is some defect in the goods, then the consumer can take action. You can go to consumer awareness forum, consumer court for complaint, but if you are buying any smuggled goods then there is nothing you can do in it. So don’t fall for cheap.
