PatnaUpendra Kushwaha on Saturday resigned from the membership of the Bihar Legislative Council, less than a week after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar quit Janata Dal United (JD-U) and floated a new party Rashtriya Lok Janata Dal (RLJD). . Kushwaha submitted his resignation to Legislative Council Chairman Devesh Chandra Thakur days before the commencement of the five-week budget session of the Bihar Legislature. After resigning, Kushwaha took a jibe at the chief minister.
Kushwaha tweeted, “Chief Minister, “Twadiyan Vastu Tubhyamev Samarpaye (It means I am dedicating the thing given by you to you).” He has written, “Today I submitted my resignation from the membership of the Legislative Council. My mind is light now. There is a pleasant feeling of coming out of the Chakravyuh. Abandoning the plea, I have set out on the path of battle.

After Kushwaha quit JD(U), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) praised him for his “courage”. Kushwaha returned to the JD(U) in 2021 after merging his Rashtriya Lok Samata Party and was made the head of the party’s parliamentary board. Soon, he was nominated to the Legislative Council. Kushwaha’s decision to resign has been praised by BJP leaders like Ravi Shankar Prasad and Sanjay Jaiswal, who believe that being a nominated member of the council, he could not have faced disqualification even after quitting the JD(U).
Kushwaha was a minister in the first term of the Narendra Modi-led government and had quit the NDA and joined the Grand Alliance a few months before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Kushwaha believes that Nitish Kumar has surrendered to current ally RJD, which wants Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad’s younger son Tejashwi Yadav to be the next chief minister.
Kushwaha will begin a statewide tour on February 27, which he describes as part of an effort to protect the aspirations of the “lav-kush” (Kurmi and Koeri) and extremely backward classes. He alleges that this community is on the target of the “nepotistic” RJD.(Agency)
