The US Geological Survey (USGS) said that the magnitude of the earthquake was measured at 5.4 and it occurred at 5:35 local time. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 22 kilometers north-northwest of Midland at a depth of about nine kilometers from the ground.

The National Weather Service office in Midland earlier tweeted warnings that it would be the fourth strongest earthquake in Texas state history. Geophysicist Jenna Pursley of the USGS’s National Earthquake Information Center in Colorado said the quake was felt by more than 1,500 people. He said that after the earthquake, another tremor of lesser intensity was felt.
