Stents: Major decision of the Central Government, inclusion of stents in the list of essential drugs;  price will be cheaper


New Delhi : The Union Health Ministry has included stents in the National List of Essential Medicines. Therefore, it will help to reduce the cost of life-saving meditation. Following the recommendations of the expert committee, the Central Government has taken this decision. According to Indian law, stents come under the purview of the drug control law. Since it is a life saver, there is a demand that it should be included in the list of essential medicines and control their cost. Similarly, the number of people opposing him would have been bigger. After the government’s decision, the price of stents will be announced soon, said the sources. Stents are used in the treatment of heart disease patients.

The government would have set up a National Standing Committee on Medicines (SNCM) in 2018 to review and improve the National List of Essential Medicines. SCNM submitted its final report on 9th September and it was fully accepted by the Ministry of Health. According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Health, it has been said. The SCNM recommended the inclusion of coronary stents in both the categories mentioned on 6th November. Bare Metal Stents (BMS) and Drug Eluting Stents (DES) which include Metallic DES and Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold (VBS)/ Biodegradable Stents, said the notification. The Health Ministry has accepted the recommendation of the SCNM and has notified the inclusion of coronary stents in the NLEM 2022 with immediate effect, it said in the notification.
