Born in Madhya Pradesh and shone in Bihar
Sharad Yadav was born in 1947 in Hoshangabad, Madhya Pradesh. The name of the village is Babai. Father Nand Kishore Yadav was a farmer and mother Sumitra Yadav was a homemaker. Sharad was sharp in studies from the beginning. He got his primary education from Hoshangabad itself. After this, he completed his studies till 12th standard from Higher Secondary School, Itarsi. BSc from Science College, Jabalpur in the year 1964 and engineering degree from College of Engineering, Jabalpur in the year 1970. He also got a gold medal in engineering studies. Sharad was influenced by politics during this time and he not only contested the student union election in the college but was also elected the student union president of Jabalpur Engineering College (Robertson Model Science College). He was also a skilled speaker.
Inspired by the socialist ideas of Dr. Lohia
When Sharad Yadav was busy in student politics, then the waves of revolution of Loknayak Jai Prakash Narayan’s democracy and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia’s socialism were rising in the country. Sharad Yadav was also greatly influenced by him. Inspired by the socialist ideas of Dr. Lohia, Sharad started his main political career. As a youth leader, he actively participated in many movements and during the Emergency, Misa also went to jail as a prisoner.
Won the Lok Sabha elections at the age of 27, reached the Parliament for the first time
Sharad Yadav’s political career started in 1971. He was a Lok Sabha MP for a total of seven times while he was elected a Rajya Sabha member three times. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1974 at the age of 27 from the Jabalpur Lok Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh. After this he never looked back. Later Sharad was also elected MP from Budaun Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh and Madhepura Lok Sabha seat in Bihar.
Congress veteran came into the limelight by defeating Govind Das
Sharad Yadav’s name came into limelight at the national level when he defeated veteran Congress leader Govind Das as a common opposition candidate in the 1974 Lok Sabha by-election in Jabalpur. Prior to this, he had become a major face of the country’s student and youth movement as the President of the Jabalpur University Students’ Union. In 1984, he contested against the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi from the Amethi Lok Sabha seat.
