Mumbai: To get people out of traffic jams, various options are being provided from the Center to the State Government. Taking this link forward, BJP MP from North Mumbai, Gopal Shetty wrote a letter to Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on November 23 last year, seeking permission from Madh, Manori, Borivali in Malad West. Requested to start ro-ro ferry service up to Uttan coast of Bhayandar West via Gorai. Not only this, Borivali’s local MLA Sunil Rane also talked about starting such a service by sending a letter to Gopal Shetty.

Significantly, after studying the benefits of providing ro-ro ferry service to lakhs of people living on the sea coast, Union Water Resources Minister Sonowal has approved this scheme by flagging it off. With the implementation of this scheme, the traffic pressure on the road and rail routes will be reduced. According to Shetty, there is a large seafront stretch from Marh to Bhayandar in north Mumbai. People of this area have no option of travel except local trains.

It is noteworthy that the Central Government also believes that ro-ro ferries and waterways transport can be highly beneficial by reducing travel time, improving transport costs and reducing pollution. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has started developing an ecosystem mechanism to promote Ro-Ro ferries and waterways transport in the country.

Funded 45 projects worth Rs 1,900 crore

The Ministry of Shipping, Ports and Waterways has funded a total of 45 projects worth Rs 1900 crore. The scheme comes under the Sagarmala program of the ministry. Taking cognizance of this scheme, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has given detailed information regarding Ro-Ro ferry to MP Gopal Shetty. A total of 31 proposals in Maharashtra have been allocated Rs 935 crore by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The work of this scheme is in progress under the Maharashtra Maritime Board. Marve and Bhayandar have been completed. The construction work of Manori and Vasai jetty is in progress.
