Nagpur. A fire broke out on Monday afternoon on the third floor in the A wing of the police building located in Civil Lines. There was a stir in the whole office. Officers and employees gathered. The fire department team extinguished the fire after reaching the spot. Information about burning of records room files in the fire has come to the fore. The A wing of the police building houses the office of the commissioner of police while the B wing houses the office of the rural superintendent of police. There is an independent room of Police Welfare and Accounts Department on the third floor of A wing.
Here files related to cash and police welfare fund are kept. Room officer Avanti Deshmukh had locked the room on Friday. During 3.30 pm on Monday, an employee reached the office with the check of the concerned department. He could smell something burning from the room. The employee informed Deshmukh. On opening the door of the room, a balloon of smoke came out, everyone got scared.
The information about the incident was given to the top officials and the fire department. Officers and employees including CP Amitesh Kumar, DCP Ashwin Patil, Sudarshan Mumakka and Rahul Madane reached the third floor. By then water had started pouring from the sprinklers installed in the building. Without delay, the fire brigade team also reached the spot.
The fire came under control within a few minutes but by then the files related to the welfare fund had been burnt. 3.45 lakh rupees were also kept in the same room but there was no damage to the rupees. There is a possibility of fire due to short circuit. The CP has asked the building maintenance department to conduct a safety audit of the entire building.
