New Delhi : National Legal Services Day is celebrated every year on 9 November to commemorate the introduction of the National Legal Services Authority Act, 1987, which came into force on 9 November 1995. On this day people are made aware about the availability of free legal aid. By organizing legal awareness camps by the State Legal Services Authorities. Apart from this, nationwide programs are also organized every year to make people aware about the various services provided by the Legal Services Authorities.

Alternative dispute resolution methods such as Lok Adalat, mediation and free legal aid have been devised. Under its provisions, the National Legal Services Authority of India was constituted on 5 December 1995. The National Legal Services Authority carried out activities including free legal aid to the needy and disposal of cases through consultation, mediation and amicable settlement. Thus, it was a unique attempt to reduce the backlog of the Indian courts as well as provide justice to the needy litigants.

National Legal Services Day was first celebrated in 1995 to commemorate this occasion. The National Legal Services Authority coordinates between various legal State Service Authorities and District Legal Services Authorities along with ensuring free legal aid to the people.

  • women and children
  • a member of a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe
  • mentally ill and handicapped person
  • Victims of human trafficking and begging as mentioned in Article 23 of the Constitution
  • Victims of mass calamities, caste violence, caste atrocities, floods, droughts, earthquakes and industrial calamities
  • An Industrial Workers and Immoral Trade Act-1956, Juvenile Justice Act- 1986, Mental Health Act-1987, Persons having annual income less than Rs.9000 as prescribed by the State Govt.
  • These services provided by National Legal Services Authority include preparation of statutory documents, Assistance in legal proceedings by lawyer, Proceedings of disputes, Memorandum of Appeal, Printing and translation of documents in legal proceedings etc.
