A major fraud has been exposed in the mid-day meal scheme. Seven employees, including the district coordinator of MDM posted in the BSA office, disguised themselves as cooks and ate Rs 7.42 lakh as honorarium in their own and relatives’ accounts. After the revelations in the investigation, DM Sujit Kumar terminated the contract of the seven employees and lodged an FIR against five. Apart from this, a recommendation was made to the Director General School Education for departmental action against six block education officers who were negligent in supervision. There is a disturbance in the Basic Education Department due to such a big action outright.

Recently, when the budget was allocated from the government to provide honorarium to the cooks, the BSA sought reports from all the Block Education Officers. Block Education Officer Sirathu Surendra Patel sought information from the principals of the schools by putting the list of cooks on the WhatsApp group for attendance verification. During this, information was received from some schools that the cooks listed in the list are not appointed at all.

BSA investigation revealed

ABSA informed about this to BSA Prakash Singh. When the matter came to the notice of the District Magistrate, he formed a two-member team of BSA as well as Finance and Accounts Officer Vinay Prajapati and directed to investigate the matter. When the officers scrutinized the records, a shocking revelation came to light. BSA said that between the year 2019 and 22, five employees, including District Coordinator MDM Pankaj Jaiswal, posted in the office in the name of 45 fake cooks, were sending honorarium to their and their relatives’ accounts.

So far these people have embezzled an amount of Rs 7.42 lakh. Two other employees also cooperated in this office. Apart from this, the concerned Block Education Officers also showed negligence in supervision. Based on the investigation report, the DM on Wednesday terminated the contracts of all the seven employees and directed to file an FIR against the five employees whose accounts were being diverted.
