Mumbai. Ravindra Dhangekar of the Congress and Ashwini Jagtap of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took oath as legislators on Thursday after winning the bypolls to the Kasba Peth and Chinchwad assembly seats, respectively. Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar administered him the oath.
After taking the oath, Jagtap and Dhangekar greeted the ruling and opposition members with folded hands and the members welcomed them by thumping the tables. The bypolls to Kasba and Chinchwad seats were necessitated due to the death of BJP MLAs Laxman Jagtap and Mukta Tilak.
In the bypoll, the BJP failed to retain the Kasba Peth Assembly seat, its bastion for nearly 28 years. In this seat, Congress candidate Ravindra Dhangekar defeated BJP’s Hemant Rasane in an interesting contest. The seat had become a prestige battle for the ruling coalition and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Voting for the bypoll was held on February 26 and the results were declared on March 2.
