Kerala HC takes cognizance of bandh calling against NIA raids and arrest of PFI leaders


Kerala HC on PFI Shutdown: The Islamic organization Popular Front of India (PFI) in Kerala has called for a statewide shutdown in protest against the NIA raids. The Kerala High Court has condemned this move of PFI. Taking suo moto cognizance of the matter, the High Court has said that no one can call a bandh without permission.

The Kerala High Court said, “In the order dated 7 January 2019, it was said that no one can call for bandh in the state without prior notice of seven days.” The court has directed the state government to take strict action against those who violate this order. The court said that damage to public property cannot be accepted. It also said that immediate action should be taken on incidents of violence in the state.

A day earlier, the NIA had raided the premises of people associated with PFI in 15 states and more than 100 people were arrested. PFI has been accused of being involved in suspicious activities. The names of people associated with PFI have come to the fore in many cases of murder and incidents of unrest. Law enforcement agencies have intensified investigations against PFI cases for the past few days.

Incidents of violence at many places

Incidents of sporadic violence have been reported at some places in Kerala amid the PFI strike. Stones were pelted on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses in various districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Alappuzha. According to local media reports, a petrol bomb was hurled at a vehicle which was going to distribute newspapers at Narayanpara in Kannur.

KSRTC buses, tanker lorries and some other vehicles were reported damaged in stone pelting by people supporting the strike in Alappuzha. A 15-year-old girl and an auto rickshaw driver were injured in Kozhikode and Kannur allegedly by PFI activists in stone pelting, respectively. However, the Kerala Police has beefed up security in the state following the PFI’s call for a state-wide strike and issued instructions to the district police chiefs to ensure law and order.

According to a statement issued by the police, “Strict action will be taken against those who violate the law. All policemen will be deployed to maintain law and order in the state.” Will. PFI state general secretary A Abdul Sattar had issued a statement saying that the strike would be held from 6 am to 6 pm.

Earlier, PFI activists had taken out a march on the places where the raids were conducted on Thursday. He also raised slogans against the central government and its investigative agencies. However, central forces were already deployed at all such places with the intention of strengthening the security arrangements.
