Expansion
The Ganga Pollution Control Unit in Kanpur has issued RCs to 177 tanneries for non-payment of CETP operation charges. A letter has also been written to the Municipal Corporation for arrears of about Rs 16 crore. On the other hand, the contractor operating the plant has expressed his inability to run the plant if the payment is not made by January 31. If this happens, there is a possibility of the poisonous water of the tanneries going into the Ganges.
The Ganga Pollution Control Unit operates the Common Chrome Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) at Jajmau. This plant has a capacity of 3.6 crore liters per day. In this, poisonous water of tanneries up to one crore liters is purified. The municipal corporation gives 50 percent of the operating expenses of the unit, while the remaining amount is collected from the tannery operators at the rate per skin (hide). The contract for plant operation is with Ganga Infrabuilt Company. About Rs 1.20 crore is spent every month in operation.
