IndoreHead coach Rahul Dravid on Monday said Indian cricketers who are in the plans for the ODI World Cup will play in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2023) barring injuries and senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. There will be workload management as one white-ball format will take precedence over the other.

According to the new policy of the Board of Cricket in India (BCCI), during this year’s IPL, the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and the franchises will keep an eye on the workload of the main players in view of the 50-over World Cup to be held on home soil in October-November. “Workload management has become a part of the game today,” Dravid told PTI during a press conference on the eve of the third ODI against New Zealand here. We keep reviewing these things. We gave breaks to some players (Rohit, Virat, KL Rahul) during the T20 series as per workload management.

He said, “Injury management and workload management are two different things. Given the amount of cricket we are playing, there has to be a balance between the two as to what is the priority for us in the near future. At the same time, it has to be ensured that our big players are available for the big tournaments. Dravid said that players included in the ODI World Cup plans will play in the IPL as it will help them assess their T20 skills.

He said, “The NCA and our medical team will be in constant touch with the franchises in terms of IPL and if there is any issue or injury, we will attend to it. If any player is injured or there is any other concern, then of course I think the BCCI has the right to remove them (from the tournament).” Dravid said, “But if he is fit, we will release him for IPL because it is an important tournament. It is a huge tournament for the BCCI, considering our preparations for the 2024 T20 World Cup. ,

Kohli, skipper Rohit and Lokesh Rahul have not played any T20 matches since the T20 World Cup in Australia and will also miss the T20 series against New Zealand next week. But Dravid believes the break is necessary ahead of the two-week camp ahead of the crucial Test series against Australia starting next month. He said, “You need to play some white-ball tournaments in a given period of time. Playing four Border-Gavaskar Trophy matches is crucial for a possible WTC qualification.” (agency)
