Mumbai: INS Vagir, the fifth submarine of the Kalvari class submarines, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on Monday, adding to the strength of the force. ‘INS Vagir’ has been built by ‘Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL)’ in collaboration with ‘M/s Naval Group’ of France. It was commissioned into the Navy in the presence of Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff.

According to the Indian Navy, “The submarine will further India’s maritime interests by enhancing the Indian Navy’s capability to deter the enemy. It will also prove helpful in conducting Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations to strike decisive blows in times of crisis. According to the Navy, ‘Vagir’ means ‘sand shark’, which reflects the spirit of readiness and fearlessness.

Describing ‘INS Vagir’ as a “lethal” submarine with state-of-the-art ‘stealth’ technology, equipped with formidable weapons, Admiral Kumar said that its capability and firepower will not only enhance the combat capability of the Navy, but will also increase the deterrence of the country . Kumar said that ‘INS Vagir’ is the fourth submarine inducted into the Navy in the last 24 months. Admiral Kumar said, “This is no small achievement…It underlines the coming era of India’s shipbuilding industry and the maturity of our defense ecosystem. It is also a testament to our shipyard’s expertise and experience in building complex platforms.”

MDL Chairman and Managing Director Narayan Prasad said that ‘INS Vagir’ completed sea trials in 11 months from February 2022. It has been inducted into the Navy at a very crucial time, when the geo-political environment demands that the country respond appropriately to safeguard its national interests. Prasad said that the induction of ‘INS Vagir’ into the Indian Navy is an example of a very strong and determined effort towards the ‘Make in India’ initiative, apart from further enhancing the prowess of the Indian Navy.
According to the Navy, ‘INS Vagir’ is equipped with some of the world’s best ‘sensors’ and weapons, including ‘wire guided torpedoes’ and surface-to-surface missiles, which can neutralize large enemy fleets. According to the Navy, the submarine has the capability to land Marine commandos on the water for special operations, while its powerful diesel engines can charge the ‘batteries’ very quickly. For self-defense, a state-of-the-art ‘torpedo decoy system’ has been installed in it.
‘INS Vagir’ has been inducted into the Indian Navy amid the growing presence of the Chinese Navy in the Indian Ocean. The construction of ‘Vagshir’, the last of the Kalvari submarines, is almost complete. It is being prepared to start the first surface sea voyage in March-April.(Agency)
