New Delhi, Two Diving Support Vessels (DSVs) of the Indian Navy will be commissioned in Visakhapatnam on Thursday in the presence of Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar. The DSVs are the first of its kind and have been designed and built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam for the Navy, officials said on Wednesday. The Navy said that they would be commissioned on September 22.

“Navy Chief Admiram R Hari Kumar will be the chief guest at the launch event,” it said. The Navy said the ship will be inaugurated by the Admiral’s wife Kala Hari Kumar, who is the President of the Navy Welfare and Wellness Association (NWWA). In a statement, the Navy said the ships are 118.4 meters long, 22.8 meters wide and weigh 9,350 tonnes.

“These ships will be deployed for deep sea diving operations,” the statement said. These ships are capable of conducting continuous patrol, search and rescue operations and helicopter operations during high tide. According to this statement, “The DSV project with 80 percent indigenous components has created immense employment opportunities at the local level, while also promoting indigenization which will help strengthen India’s economy.
