Mumbai : The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has challenged in the Supreme Court the bail granted to Anand Teltumbde in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case. The Supreme Court will hear the petition against the bail of NIA Anand Teltumbde on November 25.

One week’s stay for release on bail

A division bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud of the Supreme Court took note of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s submission that the stay on the implementation of the Bombay High Court order on Teltumbde’s bail was only for a week. In such a situation, there is an urgent need for a hearing in this matter. Justice Chandrachud told Mehta that he would hear it.

No evidence of involvement in terrorist activity

Last Friday, the Bombay High Court, while granting bail to Anand Teltumbde, said there was no evidence to show that Teltumbde was an active member of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and was involved in any terrorist activity. However, the High Court has stayed the implementation of its order releasing Teltumbde on bail for a week, to enable the NIA probing the case to approach the Supreme Court.

Out of 16 accused, the third accused to be released on bail

Teltumbde, 73, is the third of the 16 accused arrested in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case to get bail. Poet Varavara Rao is currently out of jail on bail on health grounds, while advocate Sudha Bhardwaj has been granted regular bail.
