Ram Sutar, the Statue of Unity, has made the world’s tallest statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Ram Sutar is 98 years old and originally from Gondur village in Dhule district of Maharashtra. Sutar was born on 19 February 1925 in Rosy Jhala. Ram Sutar took inspiration from Sri Ramakrishna Joshi. He took admission in JJ School of Art. After that he worked in Government of India and Information Broadcasting Department in Delhi. He also worked as a freelance sculptor. He would have started a studio in Delhi’s Laxminagar. Migrated to Noida during 1990. In 2006, he started his casting factory in Sahibabad. While in school, Mahatma Gandhi’s comedy Kartanacha Chitra Kadhalyacha Sutar had told an interview.
Mahatma Gandhi would have influenced Ram Sutar. Between 1954 and 1958, Sutar contributed a lot for the promotion of Ajintha and Verul. In Madhya Pradesh, he built the Chambal monument from Eka Dagdaton. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had given the job of erecting a 50 feet tall effigy of the worker to a carpenter in honor of the laborers who built Bhakra Nangal Dharanachi. So the effigy would have been installed on January 16, 1959.

The 182 meter high Shriramachi idol in Gujarat, the bronze sculpture of 10-foot Govind Vallabh Pant in Delhi, Karpuri Thakur in Bihar, Anugrah Narayan Sinha, Maharaja Ranjit Singh in Amritsar, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the Parliament were made by Ram Sutar. An effigy of Mahatma Gandhi was installed at the United Nations Headquarters, which would also have been made by Ram Vanji Sutar. Dedicated to Lata Mangeshkar, Ayodhya’s veena craft was also made by Ram Sutar.

Ram carpenters are going to make idols of Ram and Sita in the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The tallest statue of Yashah Ayodhyet Rama has also been raised in collaboration with Te Mulga Anil Sutar. Ram Sutar is responsible for making the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj of 212 meters and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s 137.2 meters in Mumbai. In Karnataka, the 46.6 meter idol of Lord Shankar is also made by Ram Sutar.
Ram Sutar was honored with the Padma Shri award in 1999 when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister. After that he would have been given the Padma Bhushan award. Apart from this, he has been honored with 3 awards from the Bombay Arts Society. He has been honored by Sahitya Kala Parishad, New Delhi.
