The seventeen-day Mahavrat of Mother Annapurna started from Sunday. Devotees took the vow of fasting for 17 years 17 months and 17 days. According to tradition, on the first day of the fast, Mahant Shankar Puri of the temple gave 17 knots of thread to the devotees. Since morning there is a long queue of devotees for darshan in the temple of Mata. From Bansfatak to Godauliya, devotees are queuing since morning and worshiping Mother Annapurna. Devotees of Mata Annapurna start the Mahavrata by wearing 17 knots of thread. Women wear it in the left hand and men in the right hand. Consumption of food is prohibited for 17 days. Fruit is eaten only once without salt. Mahant Shankar Puri of Annapurna temple told that the Udyapan of the ritual will be held on Tuesday, November 29. On that day, the temple premises including the sanctum sanctorum of Mother Annapurna will be decorated with paddy earrings. Paddy in the form of Prasad will be distributed among the devotees. The farmers of Purvanchal offer the first paddy ear of their crop to the mother. Bali, which is received in the form of Prasad, is mixed in the second crop of paddy.
