When the Allahabad High Court started functioning after its transfer from Agra to Allahabad in 1869, there were two types of advocates enrolled here. One the High Court the Barristers of the English and the other the Irish Bars and Advocates of Scotland. Apart from this, there were also many lawyers and pleaders. On February 3, 1873, 12 European barristers together established the Bar Association. Jardine was made the first President of the Bar.
According to Radhakant Ojha, President of the Allahabad High Court Bar Association, after the establishment, the name of the Bar Association was changed to Bar Library. The members then urged the Chief Justice to become its ex-officio chairman, accepting which he took over as ex-officio chairman. At that time the Bar Library was a separate unit. After two years of this, in 1875, the lawyers practicing here formed a separate organization and appointed Ayodhya Nath as the president and it was called the Lawyers Association.
At that time, Pandit Sir Sundar Lal, Jogendra Nath Chowdhary, Pandit Moti Lal Nehru, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, Sir Tej Bahadur Sapru, Dr.Kailash Nath Katju, Purushottam Das Tandon, Dr.Satish Chandra Banerjee, Pyare Lal Banerjee, Pandit Shyam Krishna Dhar, Dr. Narayan Prasad Asthana, Pandit Gopal Swaroop Pathak, Pandit Kanhaiya Lal Mishra etc. were the members. This organization continued to function till 1928.
