The Ministry of External Affairs has sent a letter to the administration and the ASI for the meeting of the G-20 countries. Corporation broke the boundary wall four days ago
For the representatives of G-20 countries, the monuments of Agra, which have been asked to save and improve arrangements, include the names of Zafar Khan’s tomb located at Waterworks Square. The name of Zafar Khan’s tomb, popularly known as Lal Masjid, was shocking in the list. Before the visit of G-20 countries, ASI was making an exercise to make park and beautification inside by making boundary wall.
The enforcement team of the Municipal Corporation went and broke the boundary wall four days ago without any notice, while not even looking at the encroachments adjacent to the tomb. The ASI objected to this and has given a complaint to the police against the Municipal Corporation. In this matter, a joint survey of ASI with the administration has been demanded from the commissioner.
Zafar Khan was the brother-in-law of Mumtaz Mahal
Zafar Khan’s tomb adjacent to the highway at Waterworks intersection is in bad condition, but Zafar Khan was very powerful during the Mughal period. He was the husband of Farzana Begum, sister of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s Begum Mumtaz Mahal. Shah Jahan made Zafar Khan the governor of Punjab after Mumtaz’s death. After this, he was made the governor of Punjab in 1649, Delhi and Multan in 1650 and Bihar in 1651.
It is recorded in the book of historian Eva Koch that he was Wazir-e-Kul i.e. Finance Minister in the court of Shah Jahan. After the Battle of Samugarh in 1658, Aurangzeb made Zafar Khan the governor of Malwa and raised his rank. On the death of Zafar Khan in 1670, Aurangzeb sent two princesses to Farzana Begum to console her.
