Saran. A 55-year-old man was lynched by a violent mob on suspicion of allegedly carrying beef in Bihar’s Saran district. The police gave this information on Friday. He said that the deceased has been identified as Naseem Qureshi, a resident of Hasanpur village in Siwan district. Police said three people have been arrested in the case and search is on for two others.

According to a police official, the incident took place on Tuesday when Naseem and his nephew Firoz Qureshi were going to meet their relatives at Jogia village in Saran district. Saran Superintendent of Police Gaurav Mangala said, “The two were stopped by locals near a mosque and an argument ensued between them.

Firoz managed to escape, but the mob allegedly started thrashing Naseem with sticks.” According to Mangla, later the mob itself handed over Naseem to the police at Rasulpur village (Saran), after which he was taken to a government hospital, where he died during treatment. Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) JS Gangwar said it was being probed whether the deceased was carrying the banned meat.

The Superintendent of Police said, “So far three people have been arrested in connection with the lynching. The police have also launched an operation to nab two other suspects involved in the case. The matter is being probed from all angles.”

One of the arrested persons is a sarpanch who is a member of the local panchayat. Based on the statement of Naseem’s nephew, the police have started investigating the incident by registering an FIR. (agency)
