The Allahabad High Court, while hearing a petition by an 84-year-old petitioner who lost his wife and daughter in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, has sought an affidavit from the Home Secretary (Communal Control), Uttar Pradesh. Compensation has been demanded on behalf of the petitioner. The court has fixed the date of February 8, 2023 for hearing in the matter. This order has been given by the division bench of Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Vivek Kumar Singh on the petition of Pyara Singh of Pilibhit.

The court said, the petition is pending since 2018 and it was not resolved by the UP government. The petitioner’s wife Bhajan Kaur and daughter Jeet Kaur were brutally killed in the riots. The Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India formulated a policy for the rehabilitation of the victims. Under this, each deceased was to be given a compensation of Rs 20,000. In this way the petitioner was to get 40 thousand rupees.

In the year 2015, the state government increased the amount of compensation to five lakh rupees, but the petitioner could not get its benefit. The petitioner filed a petition on this demand, which is pending since the year 2018. After hearing the side of the petitioner, the court has summoned the affidavit from the Home Secretary (Communal Control).
