IAF’s Project Cheetah: All major import deals have either been stopped or canceled by the central government. The Indian Air Force is now planning to take forward its Project Cheetah under Make in India. Under this, Indian defense manufacturers will equip Israeli Heron drones with strike capabilities. After upgrading under the Cheetah project, accurate and intelligence information about the enemy’s whereabouts will be available through Heron.
Under Project Cheetah, the Indian Air Force wants to upgrade its existing Israeli Heron drones with better communication facilities and missiles that can target enemy positions from long range. As per the plan, the project was to be completed with Israeli weapons manufacturers.
Upgradation will be done under Make in India
Government sources told ANI, “Now, the Indian Air Force is planning to move forward to upgrade its drones by involving Indian defense firms in defense under Make in India.” The IAF is taking the lead in the project that plans to upgrade Israeli drones in the Navy and Army with strike capabilities and better surveillance.
These benefits will come from the upgrade
For a long time, Indian defense forces have been dependent on the IAF Israel-made Searcher-II and Heron UAVs for reconnaissance and espionage purposes. With the upgrade in espionage capabilities, the forces on the ground will be able to get accurate intelligence about the whereabouts in the areas where the troops are to be involved in the operation. The upgrade will enable ground stations to operate these aircraft remotely and control them through satellite communication systems.
