22-year-old Mahsa Amini was taken into custody by the police for not covering her head. Mahsa was of Kurdish origin. She fell into a coma while in custody and died on 16 September. After this the anger of the women flared up. After the cities of Kurdistan, there have also been demonstrations in the capital Tehran. Women are demanding that the hijab should be made optional instead of compulsory.
Slogans against supreme religious leader Ayatollah Khamenei
Khamenei, 83, was also the President of Iran from 1981 to 1989. It was under his leadership that the Islamic Revolution took place in 1979.
Ayatollah Khamenei is the supreme religious leader of Iran. Despite having a democratic system in the country, he takes all the important decisions. The protesters are also raising slogans against him. After this the police opened fire.
Demonstrations are taking place against Khamenei not only in Kurdistan, but in the capital Tehran and in many cities of the country. Men are also seen in large numbers along with women.
Clashes with security forces in Kurdish populated areas

Clashes have erupted between protesters and security forces in several cities including Mahabad, Diwandere, Sakej, Buchan in Iranian Kurdistan late Monday evening. Markets in Kurdish-majority cities have also remained closed.
Demonstrations have been taking place in Iran since September 16. Men are also taking part in these demonstrations that started against the hijab.
Police firing on protesters in the city of Mahsa
In the town of Sakej in Mahsa Amini, a clash broke out between police and protesters. Protesters gathered outside the Governor’s House after Mahsa’s funeral. Here the security personnel opened fire.
According to Hengav, an organization working for the rights of Kurds, two people have been killed and more than 30 people have been injured in the firing. Among them are 2 boys and three women. A young man named Kian Derksha has been shot in the head.
After cities with Kurdish populations, demonstrations also started in the capital Tehran. Revolutionary guards have also been deployed along with the police to stop them.
More than 250 arrested for suppressing demonstration
In cities with a Kurdish population, police arrested more than 250 people on Monday. Security forces are conducting operations against the protesters. Homes are being raided. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard is also involved in the operation.
A Kurdish activist, who did not wish to be named, said security forces were targeting people working for the Kurds. Despite this, until Mahsa gets justice, the demonstrations will continue.
Police said – no one died, Chief of Moral Police suspended
Iranian police have dismissed reports of the death of protesters in the shootings. According to state media reports, police have made arrests, but no protesters have been killed. Meanwhile, Iran has suspended the head of the moral police. The police have also dismissed the allegations of torturing Mahsa, saying that he died of illness.

Criticism of religious law around the world
Shia-majority Iran is an Islamic nation with strict religious laws. Under this there are many restrictions on women. Before the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Iranian women were quite free. They were largely equal.
In Iran, women are banned from showing their faces in public and mixing with men. For a long time, women have been raising their voice against the religious law here.
Like Saudi Arabia, Iran also has a Morality Police. It monitors the behavior of people in public places and punishes people for their behavior against Islam. After the death of Mahsa, not only Iran, but Iran’s religious law is being criticized all over the world.
Kurdish population majority in Kurdistan, minority in Iran
Kurds are a Muslim community. It has its own distinct cultural and historical identity. People of Kurdish origin are more open-minded than ordinary Muslims. Kurdish women have also been taking up arms against government repression.
Kurdistan is part of three provinces of the country – Kurdistan, Kermanshah and West Azerbaijan Province. It shares borders with Turkey and parts of Iraq. The Kurdish Republic of Mahabad was also created in 1946 after the Second World War in Iran. It existed for only one year and the Kurdish population could not form a separate nation for itself.
