Woman jailed in Iran dies, creates ruckus: Arrested for not wearing hijab, women took to the road demanding justice A to Z Counsel

A few days ago, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in police custody in Iran. She was arrested by Iranian police for not wearing a hijab. Since then, women’s protests are going on in this country, which are not taking the name of stopping.

Let us tell you that since the Islamic Revolution of 1979 in Iran, women have to follow a ‘dress code’. Under this law, it is a legal offense for women to come out of the house without wearing a hijab.

Family suspects Amini’s death

Amini was originally from North-West Kurdistan Province. She went to visit the capital Tehran with her family. When she was detained on 13 September by the Moral Police for not wearing a hijab.

Police say that Amini’s health had deteriorated while in custody, due to which she went into a coma. He died after being in a coma for three days. While Amini’s family members allege that she was taken to the hospital just hours after her arrest, while she was healthy. Shortly after being taken to the hospital, it was told by the police that he was in a coma and after some time suddenly it was found that he had died.

Women demonstrated against the incident by removing the hijab

Hundreds of women protested on the streets on 17th against the incident. In addition to women, a large number of men also joined the protesters. During this, all the women expressed their protest by removing the hijab from their face and demanded justice for Amini.

People are also on the streets in Amini’s city of Sakkaj and are shouting slogans against the government. Amnesty International, however, said the circumstances in which Mahsa Amini’s custodial death was suspected showed signs of torture and other abuse. Therefore, there should be a criminal investigation into it.

Such cases have come to the fore before

Earlier in July, a video of a woman pleading for her daughter’s release in front of a van of security personnel had gone viral. The woman in the hijab kept on chasing the van and trying to catch him, as soon as the speed of the van increased, the woman fell away.

Also in July, a young Iranian woman ‘Sepideh Rashno’ had an altercation with another woman on a Tehran bus after which she disappeared. She was accused of removing her headscarf.
