Will the free ration scheme end or will it be extended? Why is it being discussed

Free Ration Scheme: In the year 2020, the global pandemic Kovid (Covid-19) started in countries around the world including India. During the lockdown imposed due to Corona in 2020, a free food grain distribution scheme has been started for the poor under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana. Now the churning is going on whether this scheme will continue or not, but no decision has been taken on it yet.

There is speculation that some decision can be taken in the meeting of the Union Cabinet to be held on Wednesday, although till now it is not clear whether this issue is included in the agenda of Wednesday’s meeting or not?

BJP has got any benefit from free schemes
It is believed that the BJP got a lot of benefit in the elections of many assemblies due to the free ration scheme. The UP election held in February this year is an example of this. The current deadline of the scheme ends on 30 September. On March 26 this year, the duration of the scheme was extended till September 30. The period of this scheme, which started in April 2020, has been extended 6 times so far.

When is the plan ending?
The deadline of the scheme is coming to an end at a time when there are some challenges on the food grain availability front in the country. According to government data, areas like eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Bengal and Jharkhand recorded a shortfall of 1.8 million hectares this year in sowing paddy, the main crop of the kharif season. This is likely to have an impact on the production of paddy this year as well.

According to the data released on Twitter by the Food Ministry today, in this scheme released for 26 months, free distribution of 1000 lakh tonnes of food grains has been done to the beneficiaries, 80 lakhs per month under the scheme. 5 kg per person is given free food grains to crore beneficiaries.
