At least three coal miners were killed in an illegal rat hole mine at Ledo in Tinsukia district on the Assam-Arunachal border on Sunday night. Confirming the incident, Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Debojit Deori said that the police have arrested five people so far after the incident.

Coal miners are feared to have died by inhaling a toxic gas like methane, he said. The slain miners have been identified as Sahidul Islam, Hussain Ali (both from Bongaigaon district) and Hasmat Ali (Goalpara district), who are under thirty years of age.
“The Rat Hole mine was being operated illegally on a remote hill top. The incident happened on Sunday around 8.30 am when the miners entered the mine to extract coal. We suspect a methane-like toxic gas leak inside the mine We have arrested five people as they were trying to bury the dead bodies and suppress the incident. We will take strict action against any such illegal coal mining activities. Before handing over the dead bodies to the respective families. But the postmortem will be done.”
Sources said the illegal rat hole mine is being run by David Naga along with several others and the three miners were brought to work by Joynal Ali, who worked as a supplier of labour.
