Gujarat: The Gujarat High Court has reprimanded the government amid the Gujarat elections. Angry over giving less compensation to the families of the deceased in the Morbi bridge accident, the court reprimanded the government and also ordered a survey of all the bridges in the state. Recently, the Supreme Court had directed the Gujarat High Court to conduct an in-depth inquiry into the Morbi bridge accident and take necessary steps. The High Court reprimanded the Gujarat government.

The Gujarat High Court has strongly reprimanded the state government in the matter of giving compensation. The court observed that the compensation given to the kin of the deceased was meager. The HC said that the compensation should be realistic and the need of the hour was to pay fair compensation. The court said that the compensation given to the seriously injured is also meager. The court has ordered the state to file a detailed affidavit and frame a policy for compensation.

It may be noted that recently the Gujarat High Court had directed the Registry to implead the Government of Gujarat (represented by the Chief Secretary), the State Home Department, the Municipal Commissioner, Morbi Municipality, the District Collector and the State Human Rights Commission. On October 31, the police arrested nine people, including four belonging to the Orewa group, following the bridge collapse. A case has been registered against the companies handling the operation and maintenance of the bridge.
