BJP has been raising this issue in the state assembly as well. On Monday, a BJP MLA had brought a cow outside the assembly premises to draw the attention of the state government towards lumpy skin disease.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has demanded that the central government declare this lumpy disease as a national disaster. He said, “Our priority is how to save the lives of cows from the skin disease. The Center has to provide vaccines and medicines, so we are demanding the Center to declare it a national calamity.”

The disease has also affected milk storage in Jaipur, resulting in an increase in the prices of sweets in the state. According to Jaipur Dairy Federation, the state’s largest milk cooperative organization, there has been a decline of 15 to 18 percent in milk collection, although there has been no disruption in supply so far.

In his letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ashok Gehlot has stressed the need for additional support to combat the disease. He has also asked to give priority to Rajasthan after the vaccine is ready.

There is no vaccine yet to combat this disease. The gotpox vaccine has proved to be effective on this. Rajasthan has 16.22 lakh cowpox vaccines, so far 12.32 lakh cattle have been vaccinated. Though more than 11 lakh animals are affected by the virus and with 51,000 cattle deaths in the state, livestock is in danger as the cases of lumpy are on the rise.
