For the restoration of the student union in Allahabad University, for which the students have been fighting for three years, the student leaders from the same student union led the movements in every field including politics, education, law, religion and culture and held top positions. This student union of the country’s fourth oldest university also gave the country two prime ministers in the form of Vishwanath Pratap Singh and Chandrashekhar, whose whole life is remembered for struggles. After the Emergency, the movement regarding the ‘Bofors scam’ and the ‘Mandal Commission’ is seen as the biggest social and political change.
Former Prime Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh, who was the leader of both these movements, had learned this attitude of politics while being the vice-president of the student union. Former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar was an executive member. ND Tiwari Tiwari, who was once the pivot of the politics of the country and Congress, was the student union president here in 1947. Madan Lal Khurana, who held the responsibility of the post of Governor and Chief Minister, was also the student union officer.
Subhash Kashyap, who was the president of the union in 1948-49, played an important role in many important decisions like expansion of the cabinet within a certain limit in Parliament and Legislature. Dr. DS Kothari, who was the president of the union in 1940-41, gave new dimensions to higher education. Chief Justice of India JS Verma and eminent economist Professor JK Mehta were also the presidents of the union.
Allahabad University, which is called the Oxford of the East, has world-class teachers in most departments since the start of teacher recruitment. It is our endeavor that the University attains the highest standard of education and restores its glory.
