Assam Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said on Sunday that 17 Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested from the state’s Biswanath district for “giving religious preaching” in violation of the provisions of tourist visa. The top police officer said that however, till now there is no evidence of these people being involved in the spread of fundamentalism. The Director General of Police said there were several instances of ‘mullahs’ coming to the state on tourist visas from the neighboring country and indulging in religious preaching, including spreading radical ideas. Mahant told that the entry of many such preachers has been banned in Assam.

17 Bangladeshis, including a “religious preacher”, were arrested on Saturday for violating visa norms from Baghmari area of ​​Biswanath district, police said. He said that out of the 17 people, eight are currently on police remand while the rest have been sent to judicial custody. These people had reached Biswanath on 13 September by bus from Cooch Behar in West Bengal.

Mahant said that the police had received a tip-off about a religious procession being organized by these 17 Bangladeshis on Friday in the banks of the river at Baghmari.

The Director General of Police said that the investigation revealed that they did not come for tourism-related activities, although they had entered the country on a tourist visa.

The state’s top police officer said, “I am not saying that they were giving fundamentalist sermons, but they were involved in some religious preaching, which is against the provisions of tourism visa. We have arrested him for violating visa rules.

“It is in vogue especially in lower Assam and Barak Valley region that clerics are invited on tourist visas to deliver religious sermons and some of them promote extremism,” he said.
